PLA, PBAT and starch-based materials: compare by application

Composition, processing windows and end-of-life conditions vary. Compare specific formulations and finished products, rather than material names alone.

PLA, PBAT and starch-based materials can be used in different formulation systems. Feedstock origin, flexibility, heat resistance and processing performance need separate assessment. Bio-based and biodegradable are not interchangeable descriptions.

Start with the finished product

Films, tableware and molded parts have different strength, flexibility, barrier and temperature requirements. Formulation, additives, geometry and processing affect performance. Raw-material properties do not represent every finished product.

Four dimensions to compare

  • Composition: feedstock, formulation and additives.
  • Use: contact medium, temperature, duration and mechanical load.
  • Processing: equipment, temperature window, drying and forming conditions.
  • Disposal: environment, standards, certificate scope and local facilities.

PFM starch-based masterbatch is a material and formulation development option. Compatibility with existing equipment should be checked against machine parameters and confirmed through sampling and trials. Raw-material certification, food-contact documentation and finished-product tests need separate review.
